Le-Van Kiet’s The Requin attempts to navigate the treacherous waters of the survival thriller genre, presenting a narrative steeped in grief and isolation. Cinematically, however, The Requin struggles immensely. The production’s limited budget manifests in visibly unconvincing visual effects (CGI) for the titular sharks and the open ocean environment, frequently breaking the audience’s immersion. The underlying themes of human resilience and the devastating impact of loss are evident, yet their full resonance is hampered by the technical execution. Within the broader canon of shark-themed cinema, The Requin positions itself closer to the low-budget B-movie category than to the polished suspense of films like Jaws or The Shallows. It offers a grim exploration of trauma and survival but ultimately falls short due to its visual shortcomings, relegating it to a niche interest for dedicated genre enthusiasts.
