Nội dung phim

Le-Van Kiet’s The Requin attempts to navigate the treacherous waters of the survival thriller genre, presenting a narrative steeped in grief and isolation. Rather than relying on gratuitous jump scares or showcasing the awe of marine predators, the film largely focuses on the psychological deterioration of its protagonist. Cinematically, however, The Requin struggles immensely. The production’s limited budget manifests in visibly unconvincing visual effects (CGI) for the titular sharks and the open ocean environment, frequently breaking the audience’s immersion. This technical flaw severely undermines the film’s aspirations for visceral horror and its potential to deliver a truly harrowing survival experience, diminishing the stakes and the sense of genuine peril. The low-budget constraints are a constant drawback.

Alicia Silverstone delivers a commendable performance as Jia, embodying raw desperation, profound fear, and an unwavering will to survive amidst personal tragedy. Her portrayal is undoubtedly the film’s strongest asset, as she carries the emotional weight despite a somewhat disjointed script. The underlying themes of human resilience and the devastating impact of loss are evident, yet their full resonance is hampered by the technical execution. Within the broader canon of shark-themed cinema, The Requin positions itself closer to the low-budget B-movie category than to the polished suspense of films like Jaws or The Shallows. It offers a grim exploration of trauma and survival but ultimately falls short due to its visual shortcomings, relegating it to a niche interest for dedicated genre enthusiasts.
